Those are the opening lyrics to Gonna Love You Forever.
I was attending a business luncheon and was seated at a table with a song writer/ producer named Tony Bennett. No, not the famous jazz/standard’s singer. This Tony Bennett used to play in a band with Will Downing and was in the process of making his own name in the Atlanta music scene.
When I shared the idea that I had about the song, he love that it told a story that was familiar to so many people:
You walk away from a great relationship… only to realize that, well, you might want a “do over.” (My dad always says, “The grass might be greener on the other side of the fence, but you might be allergic to the fertilizer!”)
Once we had the song written I took a trip to Majic Lab Studios and got Wizard Jones (Soul Train Music Awards, Toni Braxton, TLC, Silk, SOS Band, New Edition, and Bell, Biv, DeVoe and is the keyboard player for Justin Bieber) to produce it. He did an amazing job of giving the song a live sound filled with horns, percussion and a phenomenal guitar solo.
Palmer Williams, Jr. (“Floyd” from House of Payne, Love Thy Neighbor, Monica, LSG, Keith Sweat, A Good Man Is Hard To Find!, Can A Woman Make A Man Lose His Mind?, What a Man Wants…What a Woman Needs) sang the backgrounds vocals. When I told him I wanted the vamp on the final chorus to be sung in a round, he asked me jokingly, “Are you tryin’ to write a nursery rhyme?”
Let’s just say, this is one of those songs that you’ll play over and over again… F O R E V E R !
